Cemented carbide is unbeatable against wear and withstands the extreme loads of abrasive media. A good example is valve technology.
Custom components made of cemented carbide

Not off the rack: optimum wear protection

A great number of criteria have to be considered when choosing the most suitable material. Apart from corrosion and abrasion strength, the total costs also play a major role. Special cemented carbides...

Corrosion protection of the bioreactor at Griesheim Industrial Park in Frankfurt is a job for professionals
Corrosion protection for bioreactor

Home improvement for microorganisms

Some 7000 m² of steel had to be examined in the biological wastewater treatment plant at Griesheim Industrial Park in Frankfurt and, depending on the extent of the damage, newly coated and refurbished. A five-strong team of corrosion protection experts from ThyssenKrupp Xervon was involved with this task from April to September 2009. It was the third successful reactor refurbishment job carried out for this customer.

Kalrez Spectrum 0040 perfluoroelastomer products from DuPont exhibit a low temperature resistance of down to -42 °C in static seal applications
Perfluoroelastomer components with rapid gas decompression resistance and low temperature capabilities

An addition to the family

Higher demands from the chemical and petrochemical industries require even better sealing materials: materials that are not only able to help resist a multitude of aggressive chemicals, high pressures and extremes of temperatures, but that can also withstand abrupt drops in pressure and help facilitate the reliable operation of equipment even at extremely low temperatures. Therefore, DuPont has introduced Kalrez perfluoroelastomer components, with improved rapid gas decompression (RGD) resistance and low temperature capabilities.

The combination of material and surface engineering makes the difference
Graphite film lubricant coating protects the surfaces of ceramic pump components

No fear of dry running

Operators of high-quality pump systems know that dry running usually involves severe damage to the mechanical seals and bearings. The starved lubrication also affects other pump components. A specially developed surface coating in the form of a graphite film lubricant ensures that the critical first run takes place smoothly, even with lengthy start-up under dry-running conditions.

Diabon plate heat exchanger in final assembly How the Diabon plate heat exchanger works
Plate heat exchangers made from special graphite brave the harshest conditions

The unyielding alternative

Conventional graphite heat exchangers have many advantages but are relatively difficult to maintain and require a lot of space. Therefore, compact heat exchangers with plates made from Diabon NS1 or NS2 are increasingly being considered by users. In practice, these devices not only feature impressive performance, but also offer long service times and exceptional service- ability, as confirmed by reports.

The intensity of rouging can be localised. The photos show a pump impeller before (left) and after (right) derouging
Derouging of pure water and pure steam systems

Clean surfaces

Rouging occurs in hot pure water and pure steam systems. The very low-ion water in these systems has a corrosive effect on the Cr-Ni and Cr-Ni-Mo alloys under operating conditions. A thin deposit forms on the metal surface for this reason. The aim is to avoid rouging from the minute the system starts up. If this is not possible, the deposits must be removed regularly.

Cartridge seals for use in chemical applications and process engineering
Crystalline diamond increases service life of mechanical seals

Sparkling coating

Mechanical seals are used as shaft seals in pumps, agitators, compressors and other rotary machines handling liquid and gaseous media. The process pressures which have to be contained by the seals range from vacuum to more than 400 bar. In some cases, the chemical and thermal stability required of the mechanical seal is very high. By optimising and classifying crystalline diamond coatings, it is possible to increase the efficiency of mechanical seal systems considerably when lubrication is inadequate or even when sealing against abrasive media.
